Building the Future with the Traces of the Past: Adaptive Re-use in Architecture

In today's architectural world, the concept of "Adaptive re-use" (adaptive reuse) is gaining increasing importance. Rather than demolishing old buildings and reconstructing them, this approach aims to give existing structures new functions while preserving their cultural heritage and historical significance. Since the construction sector is responsible for approximately 42% of global carbon emissions, this approach is not merely a design trend but an environmental necessity [1].

Adaptive re-use is the process of repurposing existing buildings for new functions different from their original purposes. This method preserves the cultural heritage and historical importance of buildings while giving them new life to meet contemporary needs. Considering that even highly energy-efficient new buildings must "pay off" their construction carbon debt over decades, reusing existing structures proves to be far more rational.

İkon Yapı's Successful Projects

As İkon Yapı, we provide the precise engineering and aesthetic balance required by adaptive re-use projects through our Jansen brand steel systems. Here are concrete examples of this vision:

KVL Building (Netherlands, 2021): In this project, where an old industrial facility was transformed into a multi-purpose complex, Jansen Economy 50, 60, and Janisol HI-C4 systems were used, along with our newly produced Art'15 "slim series" steel door-window systems. While preserving the building's industrial character, high insulation and fire safety standards were achieved.

Rami Library (Istanbul, 2023): Designed by architect Han Tümertekin, this project exemplifies the finest transformation of the historic Rami Barracks into a cultural center. Realized through the collaboration of İkon Yapı and Metaltek, Jansen slim series systems (Economy 50 and Art'15) were employed to achieve seamless integration of historical character with modern technology.

Conclusion

Adaptive re-use is a necessity for our planet's future and the continuity of our cultural heritage. As İkon Yapı, we continue to build sustainable spaces for the future while preserving the values of the past.
